THE BARBARIANS

With their appearances on the Nuggets compilation and The T.A.M.I. Show, the Barbarians are one of the best-remembered garage bands of the '60s. Not that it's easy to forget the sight of a one-handed drummer, complete with hook, driving his band through a garage punk number in the company of the day's biggest British Invasion, soul, and surf stars. Moulty was hardly self-conscious about his handicap; on the tiny hit single immortalized on Nuggets (titled, logically enough, "Moulty"), he tells the story of the triumph over his loss in no uncertain melodramatic terms. THE LITTER

One of Minneapolis' most popular '60s bands, the Litter are most known for their classic 1967 garage rock single "Action Woman." With its demonic fuzz/feedback guitar riffs and cocky, snarling lead vocal, it was an archetype of the tough '60s garage rock favored by fans of the Pebbles reissue series. In fact, the single, which got some airplay in Minnesota in early 1967 and then was largely forgotten, didn't reach an international audience until it became cut one, Side One on Volume One of Pebbles in the late '70s. It now has a place of honor on the Nuggets box set. The Litter were a little more successful and long-lived than the average regional garage band, recording a few albums, the last one for a major label, and evolving into a more progressive hard rock outfit before disbanding around the end of the '60s. The Litter was formed by members of two Minneapolis area mid-'60s groups, the Victors and the Tabs. (A few songs recorded by the Victors in late 1965 can be heard on the compilation The Scotty Story.) Heavily influenced by the fiercest British Invasion bands, such as the Yardbirds and the Who, they recorded their debut single, "Action Woman"/"A Legal Matter," with local producer Warren Kendrick in late 1966. "Action Woman," in fact, was not a Litter original, but a Kendrick composition. Bill Strandlof, who had played the searing guitar lead on "Action Woman," was replaced by Tom "Zippy" Caplan in the spring of 1967, just before they recorded most of the tracks that comprised their debut album. Leaning heavily on covers of songs by British bands like the Yardbirds, the Who, and Small Faces, Distortions was nevertheless a prime example of sixties garage rock at its most powerful. With the garage rock revival this local release became a coveted collector's item, and has since been reissued several times. Like many bands in the late '60s, the Litter subsequently went into a more psychedelic/hard rock direction. Their second album, $100 Fine, put more weight on original material, although their sound was growing more generic. Around this time the Litter missed out on some potential big opportunities, turning down offers from both Elektra and Columbia. They appear in a 1968 Chicago psychedelic nightclub scene in political filmmaker Haskell Wexler's classic movie Medium Cool, but only super-briefly; although they're shown playing onstage, the soundtrack includes none of their music, with the Mothers of Invention's "Flower Punk" overdubbed onto the scene. By the time they did get onto a major label for the 1969 album Emerge (on ABC), Caplan and original lead singer Denny Waite had been replaced, and their hard rock sound had become less distinguished. The Beatles spent most of their early years performing in clubs along the Reeperbahn and Große Freiheit streets in Hamburg's infamous red-light district. During that period they also played at clubs in their native Liverpool. Alan Williams, a Liverpool club owner, had arranged the Hamburg gig for his fellow Liverpudlians. In August 1960, too short on money to afford the train, the Beatles hitched a ride in a van with Williams. (At that time Stuart Sutcliffe was the fifth member of the band, but he had dropped out by the summer of 1961.) The first Beatles appearances in Germany began at the Indra Club (Große Freiheit 64). By the time most of the Beatles had been deported back to England in November 1960, they had also worked their way up to the tonier Kaiserkeller (Große Freiheit 38) and the Top Ten Club (Reeperbahn 136). George Harrison was kicked out of Germany because he was underage (17) and in violation of German child protection laws. Paul McCartney and Pete Best were deported after being charged with arson. Presented here is the softer side of the Standells and a couple killer Pretty Things tunes. THE PRETTY THINGS The Pretty Things have been a magnet for controversy since their inception. At a time when the Rolling Stones were seen as the ultimate nonconformists, the Pretty Things made them look tame by comparison. The band members' hair was longer, their lifestyles wilder, and their music louder and more extreme. Although their commercial success was limited, the Pretty Things were able not only to survive, but to evolve from R&B punks to psychedelic vanguards to 1970s hard rockers and beyond. Born survivors, they continue to command a loyal following without ever compromising their ideals or "bad boy" image. The roots of the band can be traced to the late 1950s when Dick Taylor (b. January 28, 1943; Dartford, Kent, U.K.), Michael ("Mick") Jagger and various school friends would meet for after-school jam sessions at Taylor's parents' house in Dartford. By 1961, the small group had adopted a blues approach and dubbed themselves Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys. Taylor was by now attending Sidcup Art School, where he and fellow student Keith Richards, sharing a passion for blues and R&B, got together to play guitar. As it turned out, Richards was a childhood friend of Jagger, and after the pair renewed their acquaintance, Jagger invited him to join the Blue Boys. By mid-1962, they had hooked up with guitarist Brian Jones-necessitating Taylor's switch from guitar to bass-and had renamed themselves the Rollin' Stones. read more Downloads: (please right click and save to your computer) Pretty Things - Trust Pretty Things - LSD THE STANDELLS The Standells were formed in 1962 by guitarist Tony Valentino and organist Larry Tamblyn. The early line-up included Gary Lane on bass and drummer Gary Leeds, who would later find more success with the Walker Brothers. Leeds was eventually replaced by former Mousketeer Dick Dodd. As for the name the band chose, they would later tell Dick Clark on American Bandstand, they were just "standing around" one day, trying to think up a name for the band. The quartet became a leading attraction in Los Angeles night-spots and recorded some weak selling albums and singles for Liberty, MGM, and Vee Jay. As a popular local band, they also found themselves appearing in the movie "Get Yourself a College Girl", and getting a lot of television work (most notably, a guest appearance on 'The Munsters'). The band managed to hit the upper regions of the U.S. Top 100 with tunes like "Big Boss Man" and "Someday You'll Cry", but they didn't really hit their stride until teaming up with producer Ed Cobb, formerly of the vocal group the Four Preps. Cobb wrote a song called "Dirty Water", which marked quite a change of direction from their previous clean-cut image. At first the group didn't even like the song, but six months after it was released, "Dirty Water" was the number 11 song in the nation. read more Downloads: (please right click and download on your computer) Standells - Rari Standells - Animal Girl This Months Featured Artist: MC5 2006-05-02T14:23:00.000-07:00 MC5 was a hard rock band that came out of Detroit, USA in 1964, and was an important precursor of and influence on punk rock (see protopunk). The MC5 described their music as New Music and cited the Yardbirds and The Who as the leaders of the New Sound. Standing for "Motor City Five", MC5 established themselves with their first album, Kick Out the Jams, recorded live on October 30 and 31, 1968. The album caused some controversy due to the title track's rallying cry of "kick out the jams, motherfuckers," and manager John Sinclair's inflammatory liner notes. Sinclair was politically active with the White Panther Party and Fifth Estate. The album concluded with "Starship", a cover of a Sun Ra song. In 1967, a certain Mr. David Robert Hayward Jones, a.k.a. David Bowie, had released a self-titled LP which contains the song I have made available here. It is an interesting song, to say the least. 'She's Got Medal's',<-click for lyrics, is about a woman who works at a bar and is just "one of the guys". She was built like a dude basically. "Mary" decided that. since she is mistaken for a dude, she will change her name to "Tommy". Who then runs out and joins the Army disguised as a dude. Soon "Tommy" grows tired of acting like a dude. So, after a fierce battle on the front and a huge bomb being dropped effectively killing all, "Tommy" somehow survives and goes AWOL to be a girl again. Later on, re-renamimg himself Eileen and moving to London. Where she probably had a family. And somehow, along the way, she won some medals. A Punk song if I ever heard one, well not quite! Would've been pretty cool if The Ramones covered it! Anyhow, I like it a lot. "The buzz around Abbey Road was that these guys were really good! I remember thinking,'My GOD!, These songs are of very high standard, they really have a chance to be the next Beatles!' Everybody at the label thought they might be the Beatles" - Alan Parsons The story of the Aerovons is to be envied. Four teens from St. Louis who flew to London and recorded at Abbey Road Studios and met associates of the Beatles and a couple of the Beatles themselves. The Aerovons recorded a song called 'World Of You' at a small studio in St. Louis. Where upon somehow a Capitol Records exec went there one day to pick up something for another band and was handed the song by one of the engineers at the studio. The man then phoned Tom Hartman of the Aerovons to come in for an opportunity to record. Tom's mom who also served as their impromtu manager, relayed a sentiment all the Aerovons felt to the rep, they wanted to record at the famed Abbey Road. Surprised, the Rep willingly gave a contact name and number at Abbey Road for a Mr. Roy Featherstone, head of EMI! Thus is the beginning of their journey. I'm Your King Pin/Something You Got 2005-09-20T22:32:00.000-07:00 Formed in London late in '62, Manfred Mann started out as a Jazz purist group called the Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers. Eventually, Manfred Mann added Paul Jones on Vocals and Harmonica and as a five piece unsuccessfully auditioning for Pye and Decca records. In 1963, they finally landed a contract with HMV and they officially became know as Manfred Mann. Mostly noted for a heavy R&B flavor, they had quite a few hits with more pop sounding tunes covering artists such as Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, The Shirelles and maybe most notably The Exciters "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". In 1965, Mike Vickers left the group and Tom McGuinness switch over to guitar duties. To fill the void on Bass, Jack Bruce, fresh from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, came on board, but was short lived as he eventually left to join Cream. This time Klaus Voorman joined on as Bass player and Paul jones was replaced by Mike D'Abo on vocals by 1966. These changes also coincided with a label change as the boys signed to Fontana Records. West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band was known as a pop-psych band of the mid to late 60's with a eloborate light show that rivaled The Velvet Underground. However, they certainly encompassed more than just the pop-psych genre. Acoustic folk, psychedelic rock, jazz, classical, avant-garde and even political songs made up a truly confusing career. Molded around the core of Shaun Harris, his brother Danny Harris and a friend, Michael Lloyd. The WCPAEB were joined by the eccentric Bob Markley who was a son of an oil tycoon. Bob, 10-11 years older than the other 3, had the money and connections to which the band were eventually signed to Reprise and released an album called 'Part One' 1967. But before Bob came into the picture in 1965-66, Shaun and Danny were in a group called the Snowmen and Michael was in a surf group called New Dimensions and then the Rogues in LA. They all used to play shows together and they eventually united to record a whole albums worth of material which would eventually be released on the Fifo label as 'Volume 1' in 1966. By this time they had a drummer by the name of John Ware. That's when an encounter with Kim Fowley connected them to Bob Markley who provided a private party to introduce the world to the Yardbirds. This led to 4 albums with Markley, but 2 of which Michael Lloyd did not play on as he had left the band due to conflicts with Bob. The story of WCPAEB is long and sorted, but the music is quite astonishing! There is so much more, but I cannot write it all. Offered up here is a track from their second Album titled 'Part One'. One of the more renound session musicians to play the Sitar during that time. It also helped that The Beatles, moreover George Harrison, popularized it and used it extensively in 1965, '66, and '67. There was even a myth that 'Lord Sitar' was George Harrison. It is not far fetch for me to believe that EMI/Capitol purposely divised it a scheme to cash in just for that very purpose of the association. Big Jim, it's safe to say, was more pleased by his previous album 'Sitar Beat' which was not released until 1968. It is also said that The Rolling Stones had an influence on early scene in the UK as well because of Brian Jones using it. - a personal note: There is a scene in The Beatles movie, A Hard Days Night, where George Harrison walks over to a hideous looking art piece, which looked like some strange stringed instrument made of metal, and then plucked it while saying "You don't see many of these nowadays." I always looked at that as a sign of things to come. Next is... The Pete Best Combo - Castin' My Spell(1965 Mr. Maestro 712) <-Open/Save (expires 09/06/05) We all know the legend of Pete Best. Ousted drummer of The Beatles. While his success after the fact may seem limited. He has, in my opinion, succeeded in drumming for a really good band. This song example shows just how good Pete and his band were. It's not just Pete either! The other members.. Tony Waddington - lead guitar/vocals Tommy McGurk - guitar Wayne Bickerton - bass guitar/vocals ... helped in making great tunes! Originally, asked by Beatles manager Brian Epstein to join one of his other NEMS artists (in particular, Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, Ringo Starrs previous group), but Pete declined and joined Lee Curtis & The All-Stars. Lee quit, leaving Pete, Tony and Tommy, who decided to call themselves The Pete Best Four with the addition of Wayne. Decca signed and recorded a single and then dropped the Four after little public interest. Decca apparently turned down songs the Four wanted to record. Which were then recorded by other artist on Decca's label (all of which had small hits). The Four toured the US when Tommy left in 1965. This is where Trevor Browne and Bill Burton join, both horn players, and recorded an LP "Best of the Beatles" as The Pete Best Combo on Cameo?/Savage. But by 1966, they were back to a trio and called it quits soon after that.
